Customers visiting Douglas Lumber, Kitchens & Home Center in Smithfield, R.I. have a tough time deciding what to explore first. The choices include state-of-the-art design systems, thirty-nine professionally- decorated kitchens and baths, the Andersen showcase, or the completely outfitted tools and materials department.
Company President Steven Carlino believes Douglas Lumber became one of the largest independent yards in New England by offering customers excellent service together with the latest materials and equipment.
Located in an 85,000-square-foot, two-story contemporary building on 15-acres, the home center also serves as corporate headquarters for the company. Equipped with check-out counters, bar coding equipment, and state-of-the-art security, it also is one of the first companies in Rhode Island to use a variety of computer technologies to assist customers in their home remodeling plans.
One such system is 2020 kitchen design software, the home renovator's equivalent of a video game. It is capable of sketching three-dimensional kitchen floor plans and allows the customer to move cabinets, appliances and fixtures into an assortment of layouts. When the customer is satisfied with the design, the computer produces a printout which can be taken to the builder.
Another technology in use is the Benjamin Moore paint-matching system. Given a small swatch of color such as a piece of fabric or wallpaper, a laser scanner will provide a perfectly color matched can of paint.
Douglas Lumber has taken a unique approach to displaying kitchen and bath fixtures in its home center. Because of the company's belief that customers need to see materials in place in order to make their choices, there are thirty-nine complete kitchen installations within the store. Each features its own decorating motif in the choice of floor tile, countertop materials, cabinetry, sink fixtures, and wallpapers.
Douglas has eight professional kitchen designers on staff to provide free consultations.
The store's Andersen showcase is another break with tradition. The generous space allotted to its display installations allows customers to examine and handle the full Andersen line. The showcase includes bay and bow windows, patio doors and casement, awning, and double hung windows. Douglas Lumber is an Andersen Excellence Dealer featuring factory trained Andersen service technicians.
Douglas also carries a complete line of doors and windows from other manufacturers.
The expanded hardware department at Douglas Lumber provides the professional contractor with more brand name hardware, power tools and accessories such as Bostitch, Makita, Bosch, Milwaukee, DeWalt, Porter-Cable, and Paslode.
