  • Andersen Window Guide

Andersen windows are some of the most recognizable features in any home. Finding the right window can be a little intimidating, so we will break down some of the key differences. Andersen windows are available in five major series. They each have their own unique characteristics. 100 Series The 100 Series Windows are made of Fibrex composite material. Fibrex is stronger and easier to maintain than vinyl. These budget-friendly windows are extremely energy efficient, blocking thermal transfer nearly 700 times better than aluminum. The matte finish gives these windows a unique look. They are available in white, black, sandstone and dark bronze. The colors are guaranteed to last without fading, peeling, or flaking from extreme temperatures. The weather resistant qualities seal the window from wind and water. 200 Series Unlike the 100 Series, the 200 Series windows are made of wood with a vinyl exterior.. These windows focus on their most popular sizes and options. The low-maintenance exteriors are weather resistant and long lasting. The three main 200 Series windows are double hung, gliding windows, and picture windows. The exterior colors are white and sandstone, while the interior is available in white or natural pine. This cost-effective wood option is a great value for your home. 400 Series The 400 series windows are also made of wood with a vinyl exterior. This is the most popular series of windows and doors from Andersen. These windows are built to last, resisting water and sealing out the natural elements. There are many more options in terms of style for this series, such as bow and picture windows. The interior colors are also expanded, available in natural pine, white, dark bronze or black. A-Series A- Series windows are designed with an architectural style in mind. These carefully crafted windows will be the focal point of your home. Every detail is meticulously cared for, right down to the hardware. There are plenty of options to choose from when selecting your windows. With a wide variety of wood species for the interior, your windows will have a custom look. • Choosing A Wood Species For Your Door

With so many options for wood species, deciding which one to use for your door can be a difficult task. Different woods provide different characteristics. Using a less common wood species is a great way to add style to your home. Here is a breakdown of the different options available. Douglas Fir This wood is one of the most common and widely used species. Douglas Fir is generally used in construction but has qualities that make it beneficial for a door, such as its strength. The light color and straight grains easily take all paints and stains. Pine Pine is one of the softer woods. It can have fairly erratic grain as well as knots. This is great if you are looking for wood with character. It takes lighter stains, as well as paint, very well. Hemlock This wood has fine straight grains. It is generally a lighter wood with red tones along with it. Hemlock is one of the few species that will remain true to its natural color over time. This wood also takes stain and paint well. Oak This is also one of the most common species of wood used today. This hardwood is extremely durable and has strong pronounced grain patterns. It also may feature small knots for added character. It also accepts stains and paints easily. Maple Maple has a smooth and fine grain that has both lighter and darker tones. Throughout its life, it tends to change color due to exposure in natural light. This is a great material for interior doors. Poplar This is a great wood species for your budget. The soft subtle grain makes it perfect for paint. The wood can show varying shades, but most frequently has a yellow tint to it. Cherry Cherry is noticeably darker than many other wood species, however, it takes stain very easily. There are many different factors that give this wood its own distinct look, such as darker and lighter grains and small knots. Hickory Hickory is a very smooth wood with a strong and bold grain. The color variations can be managed by using a dark stain or paint. This rough texture provides a unique look to any application. Mahogany This is considered to be one of the most recognizable wood species. Mahogany has a deep tone and thinner and less visible grain. This provides a rich and natural look. There are many other wood species out there, however, these are some of the most common. At Douglas Lumber, we are able to customize your door in different wood grains, finishes, and styles. Give us a call at (401) 231-6800 or visit us online to request a quote. Our dedicated sales staff will help you design the perfect door for your home, wherever that may be. • Add Some Style With Deck Lights

One of the most important things to remember when building a deck is keeping it visible through the night with deck lighting. There are many different styles that can accent and keep your outdoor space lit up. Check out some of these options and find the perfect lights for your application. Recessed Lights These lights sit flush with the surface of the deck boards. They illuminate upwards and outwards to spread light evenly across the deck floor. There are many options with these lights, which include finish type, material, and light color, that allow them to blend in or stand out. They are built to withstand foot traffic, so you never have to worry about wear or damage. Post Cap Lights Post cap lights are exactly what they sound like. They sit on top of railing posts. These are able to create a wide area of light surrounding the outside of your deck. Many of these lights are even solar powered which allows for quick and easy installation. Stair Lights Stair lights illuminate your staircase and provide safety at night. These lights are small and come in plenty of different options. They are mounted on the vertical portion of the stair, lighting up each stair tread. These lights usually point down to cover the ground without creating too much light. Accent Lighting These lights are mounted on the sides of a post or railing and provide light downward. These lights come in many different shapes and sizes to appeal to your style. They help provide a little more light to areas that may need it, like the edge of your deck. Keeping your deck lit is an important part of any deck building project. While they may be small accents, they can go a long way in terms of design. There are so many accessories to go with a new or existing deck, and we offer many different choices here at Douglas Lumber. Call or click HERE to find out more. Request A Quote
